Jan Vertonghen hopes our performance at Everton can inspire us to keep more clean sheets in 2015-16.
Our Belgian international defender enjoyed a solid outing at Goodison Park as we kept the Toffees at bay on the final day of the current campaign, Harry Kane’s first half header handing us a 1-0 win.
In buoyant mood as a result, Jan underlined how important defensive shutouts are and has targeted more of the same next term.
“It was important to get a clean sheet and a win and it’s good to end the season in fifth place,” he said.
“We’ve not had enough clean sheets this season and it’s a point we need to work on. Today we kept the ball well and even when Everton tried to press us we just kept it. We didn’t give them a chance to hurt us.”
Attentions quickly turn to our post-season tour of Malaysia and Australia, with Jan revealing how Sunday’s performance means the players can jet off to our first stop in Kuala Lumpur in good spirits.
“I’ve been on a few tours with Ajax and Spurs and they’re always good,” he added. “If you end the season well, like I think we did, then you can enjoy the trip.
“We’ve got games to play, it’s also a team bonding thing and it’s great to visit our fans in those parts of the world. We want to give the fans something back and hopefully we can do that. I’m looking forward to it.”
