Jan eyes more away day success

Jan Vertonghen hopes to see us continue our track record of finding the net away from home when we visit Southampton on Saturday.

With 24 goals on the road to our name so far in the Premier League season – the fourth highest away goals tally in the division – we go to St Mary’s looking to make it back-to-back wins after last weekend’s 3-1 triumph at Newcastle.

Defender Jan, who returned to the side at St James’ Park following illness, says he expects an open game on the south coast and is determined to keep Ronald Koeman’s side at bay as we bid for maximum points.

“Southampton are a very good team, they’ve played very well this season like they did last season and they’re a difficult team to beat,” he said.

“They play very well from the back so I think it’s going to be an exciting game.

“We’ve been very good at scoring goals in away matches and I think we’ve been strong overall. We’ve got a lot of players that can score goals so hopefully we can punish them.

“Of course, they are very strong at the back. They’re very organised, they’ve got two defensive midfielders who have done a lot of defensive work and going forward they have a lot of pace but we just have to stop them.

“We’ve got pace as well as strength so it’s going to be very equal and I hope we can take the win back to North London.”
