Johnnie Jackson was devastated after the biggest night of his life.
Our young, cultured midfielder could barely get his foot on the ball in a scrappy, frantic European Championship qualifier, first leg, for England Under-18s against Poland at White Hart Lane on Thursday night.
To make matters worse the visitors snatched a late winner to take a vital lead back to Poland for the second leg in April — the winners go into this summer’s European Championship Finals.
‘Jacko’ admitted after the 1-0 defeat: “I’m very disappointed after that. We didn’t play as well as we can and we know we can play a lot better.
“The management are saying it is only half-time in the tie, it’s over two legs and we’ve turned it around before.
“We know we can play better and I believe that is the best Poland can play. If we go out there and perform how we can we’ll still have a chance.
“Normally we play a lot of football but it didn’t happen. A lot of it was in the air and we couldn’t get it down and play so where normally it would go through midfield on this occasion I didn’t see as much of it as I would have liked.
“It was the biggest stage I’ve played on and the biggest night of my career so far.
“I suppose he next stage is to play here in the Premiership when the whole stadium is full.
“But it’s another step and the most important game I’ve played. I had a lot of family here and it was live on television as well — that’s another first for me. With all that in mind the result is very disappointing.”
