Iversen tops hit list

English Barclays Premiership

Steffen Iversen has again struck goal-d in pre-season. Our Norwegian hitman bagged five goals in three games on our Scandinavian tour, following on from last summer when he cracked 10 in seven friendlies before the big kick-off.

Iversen is top of the tree for the time being with our four-pronged attack all in the goals on tour. Chris Armstrong hit four while Les Ferdinand and Sergei Rebrov grabbed two each - the forward line accounted for 13 of the 14 goals scored on the trip.

Iversen looked particularly sharp considering a hectic schedule that saw him play in the European Championships and only manage a three-week break. He admits he was desperately tired at the end of last season - 'I almost had nothing more to give' - but is raring to go again.

He insisted: "The tour has gone well. I haven't played that much out here but I think that's because I played in the European Championships. I've been taking it a bit easier because I still feel a bit tired from last season.

"I only had three weeks off so it is quite sudden to come back and start playing again. I played 20 minutes in the first game, 50 minutes on Saturday and 70 on Monday, so it has been good for me.

"I've scored a few goals as well and it is always nice to do that. You start to get used to doing that now and hopefully you can carry on at the start of the season."

After sharing striking responsibilities with Chris Armstrong last term, Iversen is looking forward to a season with four forwards chasing first-team opportunities.

"Every striker is fit now, so we can share more with who is going to play," he revealed. "That is better for me because last season I was playing every game and if I had a knock, I still tried to play because we didn't have another player. Now we have four good strikers who are all fit and ready to play. This season is going to be easier for all of us."
