'It's been a crazy 12 months' - Dier on his first year with England

14 November 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

It’s been quite a year on England duty for Eric Dier - rollercoaster doesn’t quite do it justice!

The 12 months will go neatly full circle if he plays a part against Spain on Tuesday night.

The versatile midfielder has won 14 caps since making his debut off the bench against Spain on November 13, 2015. Spain ran out 2-0 winners that night in Alicante.

Four days later, Eric lined-up with team-mate Dele Alli for his first start against France at Wembley and Dele made the headlines with a stunning goal in a 2-0 win. The rollercoaster had started.

Eric’s third cap will be a game he’ll never forget as he joined Dele, Harry Kane and Danny Rose in the team that came from 2-0 down to beat Germany in Berlin. Harry began the comeback, Eric completed with a last-minute winner.

Selected for the European Championships with Danny, Dele, Harry and Kyle Walker, Eric scored in the opener against Russia only for Russia to find an equaliser. He then played in the win over Wales but England were eventually knocked-out by Iceland, a bitter blow.

Five months later, Eric played in the 3-0 win against Scotland in World Cup qualifying at Wembley, his first experience of the oldest rivalry in football – 12 months, 14 caps and now it’s Spain again, this time at Wembley.

“A lot has changed since making my debut against Spain last year,” said Eric.

“It’s been a fantastic year for me and it will be nice for me to go back to where it began with the Spain game. I’m really looking forward to playing against a fantastic international side like that.

“I enjoy that type of challenge and it’s what playing for England is all about.

“It’s a special game for me because I made my debut against them and it’s been a crazy 12 months since then. It will be nice to play against them again to see if I’ve improved or not!”
