'It's always special for me to play in France' - Hugo

02 August 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris can't wait to lock horns again with his childhood rivals AS Monaco as we prepare for Saturday’s pre-season encounter at Stade Louis II.

The fixture has more than a ‘friendly’ feel for Hugo, the French international captain and goalkeeper who spent over 10 years at Nice before switching to Lyon and then Spurs.

Managed by Claudio Ranieri, Monaco are back in Ligue 1 after two seasons in Ligue 2 and have made a host of top-level signings as they strive to challenge Paris St Germain.

“This is a friendly, but it should be like a European fixture,” said Hugo, who left Nice for Lyon in 2008.

“Monaco is a big club with a big history in France. They came from Ligue 2 but they have changed owner and now they have money to build a big team.

“They’ve showed that in the window with the likes of Falcao, Toulalan, Abidal, Rodriguez, Moutinho. It’s a fantastic team and they should be a big challenger for Paris St Germain in France next season.”

Having joined in 1997 and progressed through the ranks, Hugo made 78 appearances for Nice between 2005-2008.

“During my childhood, I played a lot of games for the Academy of Nice against Monaco,” he recalled.

“They were our rivals. It was always a big game. I have a lot of respect for Monaco, it’s a big club with a big story and they are changing the look of Ligue 1.

“Now, with Paris St Germain, we have two teams in France who can challenge in the Champions League - Paris and maybe in the future, Monaco.”
