Internationals - Thursday action, Friday preview
04 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
There were victories for a number of our players in Euro 2016 qualifying on Thursday night.
Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld completed the full 90 minutes for Belgium as they came back from a goal down to win 3-1 at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group B.
The defensive duo occupied the left- and right-back roles respectively while Nacer Chadli was an unused substitute – the Red Devils claiming three points to keep the pressure on group leaders Wales, who visited Cyprus at the same time.
Wales, though, with Ben Davies lining up for them on the left side of a back three, kept themselves on top of the pile as former Spur Gareth Bale grabbed a late goal to secure a 1-0 win. Ben completed the full game.
Elsewhere, Dele Alli and Eric Dier started for England Under-21s as they secured a 1-0 win over USA Under-23s at Preston North End. Dele – making his first appearance at that level – and Eric were both substituted as part of wholesale changes made by Gareth Southgate just after the hour mark, with our young defender Cameron Carter-Vickers stepping off the bench for the States at the same time to play the last half-an-hour.

Earlier on Thursday, Marcus Edwards and Kazaiah Sterling played key roles as England Under-18s won 2-0 in the first of two friendlies against the Netherlands this week. First off, Marcus won the penalty from which Arsenal’s Ben Sheaf fired the Young Lions into a 28th-minute lead, before Kazaiah doubled his side’s advantage five minutes after half-time. Marcus and Kazaiah were both substituted on 75 minutes while our young goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman was on the bench for England.
As previously reported , new signing Heung-Min Son (pictured, below) rattled in a hat-trick for South Korea as they thrashed Laos 8-0 in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
A number of friendlies are on the agenda today (Friday, September 4), with youngsters Josh Onomah and Kyle Walker-Peters in the England Under-19s squad for an away fixture against Germany while, at senior level, Hugo Lloris and France are away to Portugal.
On-loan DeAndre Yedlin is with the US squad as they play host to Peru, while Erik Lamela’s Argentina take on Bolivia in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Emmanuel Adebayor’s Togo are away to Djibouti in qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
