7 – Euro Star - Martin Chivers

A devastating knee injury and a ‘love-hate’ relationship with manager Bill Nicholson threatened to derail the Spurs career of Martin Chivers. But against all the odds, he became the team’s European hotshot…

What are your memories of the 1972 UEFA Cup Final?

Martin Chivers: “It was a bit of a shock ending up playing Wolves - it felt like a league game. I don’t remember much of the first half, Bill wasn’t happy with the way we were playing, and we had another big bust-up in the dressing room. As we went out for the second half, the players were saying, “Come on big fella, we know what you can do”. The rest is history – two terrific goals. I was so pleased with the first one. We were worthy winners. Afterwards, Eddie Baily wanted to kiss my feet. Literally – he got down on his hands and knees. I kicked him away [laughs]."

Martin is featured in conversation over two pages in the ‘Joy and Pain’ section of the Opus.

With 300,000 words and 1,500 photographs, the Opus is the ultimate piece of Tottenham Hotspur memorabilia.
