Glenn Hoddle has been rocked by an injury nightmare as he prepares for Sunday’s visit of Southampton.
Boss Glenn described the situation as ‘as bad as it’s been this year’.
Steffen Iversen, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Teddy Sheringham and Tim Sherwood are the latest players to suffer.
Striker Steffen picked up an ankle injury on international duty for Norway on Wednesday night while ‘Leo’ sustained a dead leg in the same match.
Teddy has an ankle problem and Tim picked up a thigh strain on reserve team duty earlier in the week.
Glenn also revealed that midfielder Darren Anderton had been back to America to see specialists about continuing Achilles problems.
Add those five to Goran Bunjevcevic (ankle) and long-termers Steve Clemence (knee ligament), Stephen Carr (knee), Ben Thatcher (hip), Anthony Gardner (knee), Willem Kortsen (hip) and Chris Armstrong (abdomen) and we have 12 players on the treatment table.
With Gus Poyet also suspended Glenn is looking at an unlucky 13 players possibly unavailable on Sunday.
A reflective Glenn confirmed: “The injury situation is as bad as it’s been this year.
“We’ve had the news about Steffen and Teddy has turned his ankle this week and is going to be touch and go.
“Darren Anderton has been back to America to see a specialist and that’s one we’re going to have to look at for the next couple of days to see whether or not he can train — he’s still got an inflamed Achilles.
“We have long-termers out in Stephen Carr and Steve Clemence and Tim Sherwood has picked up a slight thigh strain this week in the reserve game.
“Leo came off for Norway with a dead leg, so we’ll have to wait and see how he is and Goran Bunjevcevic has trained but I don’t see him starting on Sunday. There is an outside chance, but that’s all.
“All in all, with Gus suspended as well, it’s a difficult week for us.
“We want to get down to the nitty-gritty of getting our first result on the board.
“We know it will be hard against Southampton. I know that team inside-out, I know the character of that team and it will be a tough game.
“It would be if we had options of all these players we’ve spoken about, let alone without them. It will be very hard. We will have to round everyone up and see who is fit for Sunday.”
