In the Kan!

English Barclays Premiership

Fredi Kanoute marked his debut with a stunning overhead kick to grab maximum points against Leeds at the Lane.

The French striker had only been on for 10 minutes when, with his back to goal, he flicked up a half-clearance from a free-kick and volleyed beyond Paul Robinson.

It was a goal to match our equaliser just before half-time - a 25-yard piledriver into the top corner from Mauricio Taricco.

It was no less than we deserved after recovering from the shock of Alan Smith's opener after four minutes to totally dominated proceedings from about the 25th minute.

Dean Richards and Ledley King were towers of strength at the back on their return from injury and Helder Postiga was outstanding throughout.

Taricco stated his intent as early as the third minute with a curling effort that dipped just over only for Leeds to catch us on the hop a minute later.

Johnson took a quick free-kick squad to where Smith was loitering and the striker controlled and drilled home from 22 yards.

It was a dreaded goal with Peter Reid's teams well known for the ability to dig in but after the initial shock, the lads went in pursuit of the game.

Zamora and Ricketts, twice, went close before a spell of seven efforts in as many minutes midway in the half.

Carr went closest, volleying Ricketts' cross just wide, Postiga had three attempts of varying quality, Redknapp's volleyed free-kick went straight at Robinson and Davies blazed over.

It looked like it would take something special to crack the resistance of Radebe and co and it arrived after 42 minutes.

Taricco picked up Redknapp's pass in space on the left, cut in and smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

That certainly lifted spirits going into the break and we made an electric start to the second half.

Radebe had to be at his wily best to cut out Carr's cross within seconds of the whistle, King's rasper flew just over from 25 yards and, closest of all, Postiga's curler after finding a yard of space in the left side of the area.

Johnson's dipper provided a brief respite for the visitors as Kanoute arrived for Zamora just after the hour.

Chances continued to come - the outstanding Postiga looped a header just wide and Gardner nodded Carr's free-kick wide.

Kanoute's moment came with 71 minutes on the clock. Carr's free-kick was met with a couple weak defensive headers, Kanoute controlled on the edge of the box and with his back to goal, flicked the ball up and volleyed into the bottom corner.

We remained on top - Richards headed just over - and apart from Johnson's late effort, the result was never in doubt.
