Important win - Andre

Andre Villas-Boas praised the team’s 'fighting spirit' after Southampton tested our resolve on the way to a 2-1 win at St Mary’s on Sunday.

Everything looked rosy after a dominant first half performance saw us 2-0 up at half-time with Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey on target.

But the home side weren’t going down without a fight and pushed us back in the second half.

Jay Rodriguez pulled a goal back in the 66th minute and we had to defend stoutly to secure a fifth win in our last six matches in the Premier League.

“The first half was all ours and we played extremely well,” said Andre. “We kept possession and kept control of the ball.

“We knew at half-time that only a third goal and 3-0 would put the game to bed.

“As soon as they scored, the nature of the game changed and we knew we’d be in for a fight. That’s what happened.

“The lads were fantastic to hold onto the lead again, showing the fighting spirit we also showed at Manchester United.

“It was great to get the three points and it’s an important away win because Southampton, in the position they are in, can always threaten.”
