'I'm so glad I was able to give our fans a goal' - Vincent Janssen

29 October 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Vincent Janssen was a man on a mission on Saturday - the only pity that Leicester City denied his first Premier League goal from being a winner.

The Dutch striker was brought down for a penalty for our goal and referee Bobby Madley had barely taken the whistle out of his mouth and Vincent was sprinting towards the touchline after the ball.

Having retrieved if from Mauricio Pochettino, Vincent made no mistake from the spot to fire us into the lead, his third Spurs goal.

Below: Vincent speaks to Spurs TV after the draw

"I thought ‘this is my penalty’," reflected Vincent. "The gaffer threw the ball to me and when I stood behind it, I knew it was going to be a goal. It was a great moment.

"The fans have been right behind me all the time, they are such good supporters and I wanted to give them something back. I’m glad I was able to do that with a  goal."

Unfortunately, Vincent's joy didn't last long. Leicester equalised just three minutes into the second half and it stayed at 1-1 despite our territorial advantage and racking up 22 efforts to the Foxes' six. We also struck the woodwork twice through Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen and Vincent angled a shot inches wide of the post with Kasper Schmeichel stranded.

"We were much better and deserved the three points," said Vincent, who added that he wanted his game to be 'more than scoring goals', typical of this team player.

"I want to help the team, holding the ball, that’s what I’m like as a striker and I’ll go on like that, I want to be more than a goalscorer," he explained.

How about a striker being judged on goals though? "Yes, that's what you have to do, that's my job and I was delighted to get one today," he said.
