I'd rather the three points than score - Toby

07 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

The mention of his first derby goal might have raised a smile, but there was no shrugging off Toby Alderweireld’s general feeling of disappointment after the draw against Arsenal.

The central defender kick-started a magical two-minute spell with the equaliser against the Gunners. Harry Kane soon made it 2-1 with a memorable strike but Arsenal hit back to earn a point through Alexis Sanchez 14 minutes from time.

The sheer look of passion on Toby’s face - captured by photographers - said a thousand words on what it meant to score but it mattered little to the outstanding central defender at the final whistle.

“I’d certainly rather have three points than score,” said Toby. “I’m glad to help the team but I couldn’t celebrate or enjoy it afterwards because we drew.

“In the first half we played very well, put a lot of pressure on them and should have scored. We found ourselves 1-0 down at half-time but we did everything in the second half, started well, put them under pressure and created chances but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the win.

“To be honest, it feels like a loss. It feels like we should have won and that’s the mentality of this team. Now we have to take it into the next game and get back to winning ways.”

All eyes are now on that next game - a huge Europa League Round of 16 first leg against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park (Westfalenstadion) on Thursday night - a crowd of 81,359 packed in to watch the top of the table ‘Der Klassiker’ against Bayern Munich on Saturday. That game ended 0-0, so Dortmund remain five points behind their rivals.

“We will now focus on Dortmund, a massive game for us,” added Toby. “Every game from now until the end is like a cup final and we have to give everything, like we always do.

“We can all be happy with how we played against Arsenal, the energy levels we put in and now we have to show it again on Thursday.”
