'I wanted that goal, I'd had some stick!' - Victor on Hull strike

Thu 15 December 2016, 13:15|Tottenham Hotspur

It’s been a tough week for Victor Wanyama, but he certainly had the last laugh.

The popular Kenyan admitted he was ‘still hurting’ after missing a golden chance in the 1-0 loss at Manchester United on Sunday but there was room for a smile again after netting the final goal against Hull in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win at the Lane.

He’d been the subject of a bit of gentle ribbing from Mauricio Pochettino and the coaching staff in training after that miss.

Mauricio told us: “Yes, in a funny way we’ve killed him a little bit, but in the same way we said ‘okay, in the next game you must score, you need to score’.”

Below: Victor speaks to Spurs TV

Victor did just that. Christian Eriksen was inches away from his hat-trick but as his free-kick cannoned back off the inside of the post, Victor was there to mop up, burying this time from close range, the icing on the cake of a hard-earned victory.

“I’ve been having a tough week,” said Victor. “I had chances against Swansea and then United. I don’t want to see that again. The staff have been giving me stick, saying there’s no point me going to the goal because I keep passing back to the keeper and not scoring!

“For that reason, it was in my heart, I said ‘from this week, I’ll do my finishing’ and I wanted to prove them wrong. I was in the right place to score and went to the bench to tell them off!

“It was an easy goal but I guess it’s about being in the right place at the right time. The finish was easy.

“We needed to win this game. We had a tough game at United, could have got something from the game but didn’t and coming into this game was a bit tough, but we’re happy we got the three points.”
