I just want to improve - Gareth

Gareth Bale insists he's just focusing on improving as a player after picking up another prestigious award.

The flying full-back/left winger was named Player of the Year by the Football Association of Wales earlier this week.

That top award will sit nicely on the mantelpiece with our Young Player of the Season for 2009-10 and April's Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award.

Gareth's is quite a footballing tale.

Signed at just 16 from Southampton in May, 2007, he made a storming start to his Spurs career, scoring three goals in his first five starts before injury ended his season early.

Injury and the form of Benoit Assou-Ekotto restricted him to 37 appearances between August, 2008 and January, 2010 - but then he exploded back onto the scene.

He returned to the side following injury to Benoit for the FA Cup tie against Peterborough United on January 2 and hasn't looked back.

He created two goals that day in a 4-0 win and went on to start all of our remaining 26 matches as we made it into fourth place in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, scoring in both games as we beat Arsenal and Chelsea in the space of four days in April.

His form has continued this season but as everyone waxes lyrical around him, he's very much keeping his feet on the ground.

"The main thing is that I worked hard when I wasn't playing regularly and brought that into the matches.," said Gareth.

"I think now, having had a run in the team, that you learn more and more when you play every game.

"Everyone has something to learn, every player in the world. I'm learning every time I play and bringing new things into my game.

"The more I play, the more I learn and the more confident I get.

"I feel I'm progressing more and more as a player and I just want to keep doing that.

"Everyone's target is to get better and it's no different for me, I just want to keep playing, keep learning and getting better."
