Hugo hurting, but says Chelsea 'is the best type of game to bounce back'

23 November 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

As you’d expect, world-class saves were far from Hugo Lloris’ mind as the team left Monaco’s Stade Louis II last night.

“My mind is not ready to talk about that,” said the skipper, whose attitude is always team first, win, lose or draw. “Our fans, our club and most of all our players had a lot of expectations in this competition. We fought a lot last season to get this Champions League place.”

Hugo was outstanding in goal, saved a penalty from Radamel Falcao and produced one of the best saves of his Spurs career to deny Kamil Glik from point-blank range.

But it wasn’t to be as goals from Djibril Sidibe and Thomas Lemar either side of Harry Kane’s penalty saw Monaco home 2-1 and ended our hopes of progressing into the knockout stage of the competition.

Below: Hugo speaks to Spurs TV at Monaco

“We’re very disappointed, very frustrated with the way we played, the way we started the game too slowly, too sluggish,” added Hugo. “Finally, I don’t think we deserved to win, Monaco were better in a lot of areas in the game.

“It’s a big disappointment but we need to keep our chins up because it’s a big game on Saturday.”

Needless to say, it’s Chelsea at the Bridge on Saturday, followed by Swansea at home (December 3) and then our final group game against CSKA Moscow at Wembley (December 7).

We remain unbeaten in the Premier League and Hugo feels this London derby is perfect for us.

“I have no doubt about that,” he added. “I said the same after we lost against Leverkusen at Wembley, this is the best type of game to bounce back (we faced Arsenal away on that occasion). The only thing is to digest the frustration of this defeat and look forward.”
