Hughton's White Hart pain

English Barclays Premiership

Chris Hughton was bitterly disappointed after his reserve side's opening night at the Lane ended in defeat.

Chelsea spoiled the homecoming when a goal from Leon Knight grabbed a 2-1 win for the visitors with two minutes left of the FA Premier Reserve League encounter.

Defeat was somewhat harsh on Hughton's men and he reflected: "It was a big chance for us to play at White Hart Lane. We don't get that many opportunities to do that so the manner of defeat was disappointing.

"We conceded what we would describe as bad goals and you would like to think that we would make more out of all the possession we had.

"Matthew Etherington was prepared to run at their full-back all night and crossed in a succession of quality balls. We also had plenty of quality from set-pieces so the lack of end product was disappointing.

"You have to give some credit to Chelsea though. They defended well and defended in numbers."

Etherington, pictured right, provided plenty of spark down the left but one of the defenders dealing with his crosses was ex-Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona star Winston Bogarde. "But he was only one player in a back four," said Hughton. "I would like to think with two men up front and two wide and with all that possession that we could expose them a bit more."

The reserves are next in league action against Watford in a match that has been switched from the Lane to St Albans on Wednesday September 27.
