Hughton's notes

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Chris Hughton looks through his scouting notes and gives us the rundown on Chelsea before Saturday's clash at the Lane.

Coach Chris knows all about Damien Duff from his Irish connections and the threat of Arjen Robben as they tear down both flanks but he also recognises the contribution of midfielder Claude Makelele...

CHELSEA HAVEN'T changed dramatically over the last eight or nine games.

They started the season with two up front and a diamond shape in midfield, Makelele the holding player and Lampard pushing on.

They changed that to a 4-3-3 and the fact that Robben was missing for the early part perhaps dictated the way they played. He's now fit and they've adapted Duff's position and, knowing him like I do, I knew he could play in the right because he has that flexibility.

They've come up with a system that suits the players they've got. They haven't conceded a lot of goals and then the qualities they have going forward makes them a such a good team.

I certainly see the system as a 4-3-3 with whoever plays up front, Gudjohnsen or Drogba with Robben and Duff wide. I know they will tuck back into defensive positions when they need to but it's a 4-3-3 and the two wide players are out and out attackers.

They are defending well as a team. There are two ways of defending - one where you get enough bodies behind the ball to make it difficult, the other is keeping the ball for long enough where you don't have to defend so much. Chelse keep the ball well, have gifted enough players and attack well enough that they don't have to defend so much.

When they are called upon as a team they defend very well and what they have got is very good individual defensive players, starting with Makelele in central midfield. You can see the reason why he bought him from Real Madrid. Everyone spoke about him and even when the bigger names would get all the headlines, he was often seen as their most valuable player. Now he's doing a similar job at Chelsea.
