Chris Hughton gives his assessment of the challenge ahead at Anfield against Liverpool this weekend...
LIVERPOOL always go with a back four and on a few occasions they've played four in midfield and one player just off the front man in an advanced midfield role. For the last couple of months they've been without the quality of Morientes and Cisse up front and missing that quality would hurt anyone.
Morientes is a great player, one a lot of clubs were interested in although he showed a desire to stay at Real Madrid. The loan spell at Monaco was a success and that's where we saw his quality. His move to Liverpool has been interrupted by injury but we'll see the best of him next season.
I'm sure their system on Saturday will be based again on what they have available up front. With what they've had available in the last couple of months, they've had little choice. Having said that, it's worked quite well. You only have to look at their progress in the Champions League to see that it's always a very hard game there.
Steve Finnan is a player I know well from Ireland. He's playing well and the key for him is to be playing consistently. When the new manager came in, brought in Josemi and played him at right-back, Steve had a spell at right midfield where he did a good job and he's capable of that. Right-back is his best position and I think the fact he's played consistently and played a lot of games, his form has improved.
We all know about the threat of Steven Gerrard. He's tenacious in the challenge and what puts him above most is that explosive pace to get into positions and his range of passing which in the English game is as good, if not better, than anyone around. On the down side, he's missed a few games over the last couple of seasons and with the range he's got, he's right up there.
