Hughton's Nicholson honour

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Chris Hughton says he will never forget the honour of having the great Bill Nicholson present on a youth team tour in his younger days at the club.

The coach, who will be present at Bill's Memorial Service at White Hart Lane on Sunday, recalled that he was most certainly in awe of our most successful manager when in his company as a schoolboy player at Spurs.

The Memorial Service begins at 11am on Sunday and everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate Bill's life and achievements. Several players who played under Bill during his 16 years as manager will give tributes including Jimmy Greaves, Martin Chivers and Steve Perryman. Gary Mabbutt and Glenn Hoddle, who were both brought to the Club on Bill's recommendation, will also pay tribute.

It is anticipated that the service will last approximately one hour. Supporters should enter via the Paxton Road turnstiles.

"I can remember being here as a 13-year-old schoolboy and bumping into him occasionally," reflected Chris. "It was always, because of the stories we'd been told, a case of looking at him with such esteem.

"It was always an honour for us to be in his company. I can remember at 16 going on a youth team tour to Switzerland and Bill, not the manager any more, came on the trip with us.

"For us it made it such a big occasion, just to have him with us and occasionally for him to talk to us about the game. It is certainly something I've never forgotten. I was certainly in awe and it was quite nerve racking as a young player. To have somebody in your company that is so highly thought of - we were aware of what he meant to everybody at Tottenham.

"Just to have opportunity for him to make a comment to you was fabulous for us."
