Hughton on promising duo

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Chris Hughton was delighted with the contributions of young midfielders Jonathan Blondel and Rohan Ricketts in the Carling Cup game against Coventry City.

The 19-year-old Blondel made his debut for the club as a substitute against Southampton just over a year ago and was awarded a first starting place in left midfield at Highfield Road. He turned in an accomplished performance before being replaced after 62 minutes by goalscorer Ricketts.

While Blondel is an attack-minded player of great promise, Chris was quick to point out how diligently he accepted and carried out his defensive duties.

"We thought he did well and he worked very hard," said Chris. "What he did say afterwards was that he was very conscious about the responsibilities he had - the defensive responsibilities.

"Certainly in his performance, with regards to disciplines, he couldn't have done any better. That is the thing he was more concerned with.

"He is certainly one that, for his size, is a very, very competitive player. I think for a player like Jon - when he played in Belgium he had a little bit more of a free role - it is a case of adapting to the responsibilities of being tied down to a certain position.

"It is not something that can happen overnight and I think Jon would be the first one to admit that it took a bit of time for him to adapt to the English game and to play in certain positions."

It was Ricketts who bagged the glory at the end of the night with his 20-yard piledriver into the top corner to boost his growing reputation. If the 20-year-old is very confident boy, Chris feels this is borne out of ceaseless hard work on the training ground.

"Testament to Rohan, he came here last season and, as each month went past, he certainly didn't do anything wrong and kept impressing.

"Consequently, that is why he has found himself not only in the first team squad, but in the first team this season.

"He is a character, that's for sure, but that doesn't take anything away from his game. What he has done is work very hard. What you see on the pitch on a Saturday or in a reserve game is what you see every day in training.

"The most important thing he's got to be aware of is that he can't lose that. It is the reason that he's got himself very much in the frame."
