Hughton on deadly Defoe
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Chris Hughton says the club are reaping the benefit of Jermain Defoe getting straight among the goals following his switch from West Ham.
The 21-year-old has netted four goals in three games since taking the field for the first time as a Spurs player against Portsmouth two weeks ago.
Although the livewire striker has been a prolific goalscorer at every level he has played at and every club he has played for, Chris suspects it must still be a relief for him to get off the mark so swiftly.
“He has lived up to our expectations of him,” reasoned the first team coach. “We knew what a quality player he is and what he is like as a finisher.
“You are still never sure though. There are numerous quality players that have gone to clubs and started with a barren spell - even if performances have been good.
“It must be such a relief for a forward to go to a club, score on his debut and be in the goals straight away. That is where we are fortunate with Jermain.
“At this particular time, we’ve got Jermain and Robbie playing up front, they have forged a good partnership together and both look like scoring goals.”
Chris’ point about strikers getting that confidence-building early goal is illustrated by the attention that was focused on Helder Postiga and Bobby Zamora, who both had to wait a while for a first goal for the club.
Chris, however, states that the contribution of forwards to the team does compensate for elusive goals.
“For us as coaches it is about performances and you want your forward players contributing towards a good win. Most strikers, particularly the ones we’ve got here, are always saying that it is not about their goals but about the results of the team.
“Of course, over a period of time, forwards are going to be judged on the goals that they score.”
