HUGHTON HAPPY FOR LENNON

Chris Hughton was delighted for Aaron Lennon after the winger's sparkling cameo performance for England against Trinidad & Tobago.

Chris Hughton was delighted for Aaron Lennon after the winger's sparkling cameo performance for England against Trinidad & Tobago.

The 19-year-old stepped onto the World Cup stage for the first time just before the hour mark alongside Wayne Rooney with England struggling to break their opponents down in Nuremberg.

Aaron immediately took on and beat his man, continued to do so for the rest of the match and had a hand in both goals scored by Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard as England ran out 2-0 winners to qualify for the knockout stages.

“It was fantastic to see him get on and it was a very good substitution for England at that stage of the game,†said coach Chris.

“If you look at the players in the squad who can come on and make a difference, Aaron is certainly one of those.

“That was the reason he was drafted into the squad and to get an opportunity in the last 30 minutes when they turned the game around was great for him.â€Â

It was Aaron’s second full cap and completed his rise from our reserves at the start of last season to a Premiership regular, England U21 international, B international, full international and now World Cup performer.

Chris added: “He’s taken every step in his stride and grown in stature and you have to give him credit with his willingness to want to learn, to improve and be part of what was a consistent team here last season.

“In the end it wasn’t such a big surprise that he was drafted into the England squad but what has impressed over a period of time now is his confidence when he gets out there and that showed again against Trinidad & Tobago.

“He wanted to make an impact and he did just that.â€Â
