David and Gareth Howells kept their cool to help the Spurs Legends team win a tense penalty shootout in Berkshire on Sunday.
Playing against a Daisie Connolly XI, David stepped up to despatch his second spot kick at Sandhurst Town FC before his younger brother Gareth, the Legends team’s goalkeeper, made a fine save to secure a 9-8 shootout victory.
It followed a tight game which ended all square at 1-1, Trevor Wilkinson’s glancing header from David Howells’ cross giving the ex-White Hart Lane men a 17th minute lead before Graham Huddison smashed home the hosts’ equaliser just beyond the half-hour mark.
Keeper Howells made a brave low save at the feet of an opposing attacker shortly afterwards, while Andy Sinton curled a free-kick just wide after being fouled 20 yards out at the other end.
Spurs stopper Howells was again called on in the second half, reacting quickly to push a fierce shot onto the bar and away for a corner.
The spot kick drama then ensued with Garry Brooke, David Howells, Mark Falco and Steve Slade among the Legends’ scorers in a lengthy shootout that saw involvement from the vast majority of players from both sides.
The sides couldn’t be separated, though, so when sudden death ensued it was David Howells who stepped up to fire low into the bottom corner to give the visitors the upper hand.
With the pressure all on the subsequent taker, Gareth Howells dived to his left to palm the ball away and secure the win for his side.
