David Howells was the latest Club legend to represent us in China over the weekend, as part of the Football Dream initiative.
The former midfielder, part of our 1991 FA Cup-winning team, was in Shanghai for the city’s Mega Selection, alongside Inter Milan legend Ze Maria.
Alongside grassroots coaches from both clubs, the pair selected the top 12 players that took part in a range of football-based challenges over the course of two days.
It follows on from previous Mega Selections held in Guangzhou and Suzhou, attended by Ossie Ardiles, and comes ahead of the upcoming Beijing selection, where Ledley King will be casting his eye over the young hopefuls.
Top players from all Mega Selections will then come together in the Chinese capital next week to battle it out to be amongst the lucky group of 24 players to visit Europe later this year.
This elite group will be split in two, with half heading to Italy to train at Inter Milan’s Academy, and the other half to visit Tottenham Hotspur for a camp held at our world class training centre.
Backed by the Youth Sports Development Bureau within the General Administration of Sport of China and involving a partnership between the Youth Sports Development Bureau, China Extreme Sports Culture Company and Global Media, Football Dream sees budding footballers aged between 14 and 16 from four provinces in mainland China, and Hong Kong, battling it out for the chance of a lifetime.
