Helping local people walk towards a healthier lifestyle
13 January 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has launched a new walking club, Walk The Walk, designed to help local people take steps towards adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Currently over half of all adults and one in three 10 and 11 year olds living in Haringey are now classed as obese or overweight.
As part of the Club’s commitment to combating the rise of Haringey’s obesity levels and supporting the health and wellbeing of its local community, Walk The Walk will help people of all ages and abilities benefit from regular physical exercise with one-to-one guidance available to participants from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s health and wellbeing coaches.
The free sessions run every Wednesday morning, starting from White Hart Lane and leading participants on an hour-long walk through many of the area’s green spaces.
The project is funded by Haringey Council and forms part of its Smarter Travel scheme which encourages residents to think of active ways to travel - walking and cycling rather than driving - in a bid to boost physical activity levels.
Ngambo, a participant from Walk The Walk, said: “Walking is a good way for me to start to get my fitness levels up - it’s a first step towards building my stamina and I really enjoy the walking club.”
James Isaac, Health and Equalities Manager, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “Walk The Walk is just one of a number of new projects we’ve launched to help local residents adopt a healthier lifestyle.
"Haringey has one of the highest levels of obesity in London but doing something as simple as an hour of walking can help people get fitter and ultimately lead to healthier, happier lives.”
Last year, Tottenham Hotspur was amongst the first organisations to join an alliance dedicated to combating the rise of obesity in Haringey. The partnership - the Haringey Obesity Alliance - sees organisations and individuals from a range of different backgrounds teaming up to help make Haringey a healthier place.
