Harry's respect for Ryan

04 June 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Ryan Mason’s rise in 2014-15 proved an inspiration to Harry Winks.

The young midfielder would love to follow in Ryan’s footsteps through the Academy, development squad and into the first team.

After  a few spells on loan and a few near misses, Ryan did just that last season.

The 23-year-old smashed home one of the goals of the season against Forest in September, made his Premier League debut at Arsenal three days later and was a fixture in the side from there, ending up with 37 appearances in all competitions.

His performances were rewarded with a call into the England squad, a first cap against Italy in March and he’s back with the Three Lions for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday and qualifier in Slovenia next week.

Harry, 19, took his first steps on that ladder with his Spurs debut off the bench against Partizan in the Europa League at the Lane in November.

He trained regularly with the first team squad and was part of our touring squad to Malaysia and Australia, where he played 90 minutes against Malaysia XI and then half-hour off the bench for Ryan against Sydney FC.

“I’ve learned a lot from Ryan,” said Harry, an England youth international. “He’s come through the academy and has helped me out a lot in terms of what I need to improve on.

“When I’m watching him play it’s brilliant because I know he’s been where I am and he’s gone on to do what he’s done.

“He’s always there to give me advice and when he says something I take it on board.”

Harry played a squad-high 18 times for the Under-21s last season, scoring twice, and his determined to push on again when the players return for pre-season training in July.

“I want to take this mentality into next season, to be around this team and try to stake my claim,” he said. “I need to keep working hard and stepping up everything that I’m doing now. I’ll work hard and try to get into the first team squad.”
