Harry's delight

Wed 08 December 2010, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Redknapp described clinching top spot in Group A of the Champions League as 'a great achievement' after Tuesday's 3-3 draw at FC Twente.

Harry Redknapp described clinching top spot in Group A of the Champions League as 'a great achievement' after Tuesday's 3-3 draw at FC Twente.

The point following another rollercoaster of a night in the competition proved enough to take pole position after Werder Bremen beat Inter Milan 3-0 in Germany.

We won three, drew two and lost just one of our six matches to top the group by a point from Inter, the reigning European champions.

We will now be seeded for the last 16 draw which takes place in Nyon on Friday week, December 17.

"I said to the lads beforehand that it was important we topped the group after coming this far," said Harry at the Grolsch Veste Stadium.

"For me, it was the most difficult group.

"It was a group full of quality teams. I thought Werder Bremen were an excellent team, Twente as well, they gave us two very tough games.

"Then you've Inter Milan, so to top the group is a great achievement."

Jermain Defoe struck twice and we were the beneficiaries of a bizarre own goal when goalkeeper Sander Boschker completely missed Peter Wisgerhof's backpass and the ball trickled home.

That was the opener after 12 minutes and the first of three occasions that we took the lead.

However, the Dutch champions showed exactly why they've only lost twice domestically all season by hitting back every time.

'JD' finished Aaron Lennon's clever pass for 2-1 in the 49th minute, Robert Rosales headed home for 2-2 after 56, JD slotted home the rebound from a Wilson Palacios shot for 3-2 three minutes later only for Nacer Chadli to curl home a free-kick for the third equaliser.

That's not the whole story though as we lost Jermaine Jenas to injury in the 34th minute and Niko Kranjcar, who moved from the right to central midfield, was forced off by a hamstring injury five minutes from time.

"We were looking to win but they kept coming back strong," added Harry.

"They played some good stuff and are a good footballing team. You can see why they are doing so well in the league.

"We got the early goal, it was unfortunate mistake by their keeper, but then we were forced into a change when JJ injured his calf again.

"We later lost Niko and Robbie Keane ended up playing in central midfield, so we've had to chop and change.

"Overall, I'm delighted. It was a great result and we did what we had to do. We're top of the group with 11 points and I'm delighted for the players."
