Harry Winks: "For me, the season starts here"

A stubborn Barnsley team wasn’t the only hurdle negotiated as we progressed in the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Tuesday night - Harry Winks took a big step forward on a personal level as well...
The midfielder completed his first 90-minute stint since suffering a serious ankle injury at Burnley in April as we ran out 1-0 winners in a tough third round encounter.
It was a typical all-action display from the Academy graduate alongside Mousa Dembele in the engine room and ‘Winksy’ almost opened his account in the second half only to be denied by a fine save from Adam Davies in the Barnsley goal.
In the end, Dele’s goal on 65 minutes did the trick as we chipped away at the Tykes’ resolute defence with 25 attempts at goal - one proved enough to send us into the fourth round.

“For me, the season starts here,” said Harry, who was enjoying his best season until that afternoon at Turf Moor - his 33rd and final appearance of such a promising 2016-17 campaign.
“It was a good way to put everything behind me in terms of my injury and move on now, start to build confidence and try to get as many minutes and games as possible.
“I felt really good, just like I felt last season and back to my best in terms of my movement and getting around the pitch. I’ll look to build from here.”
We dominated for long periods at Wembley - although we had Michel Vorm to thank for a key save at 0-0 at the start of the second half - but ran up against a red wall of defenders time and again
However, Harry was always confident we’d get the goal in the end. “You just feel we’ve players who can change games in a second,” he said.
“These players have proved it already so many times - Dele, Sonny, Fernando, Harry and Christian were on the bench. We’ve top players in those attacking positions and it’s usually a case in these games of continuing to play, continuing to try to carve out those chances and we were confident that eventually the goal would come.”
The draw for the fourth round takes place after Manchester United’s tie against Burton Albion this evening.
