Harry on Peter the great

08 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane has told us about the invaluable advice handed to him by Peter Crouch as he started on his path from Academy trainee to becoming the first Spur to hit 30 goals in 23 years this season.

Both strikers arrived at the club in the summer of 2009.

An England regular at the time, ‘Crouchy’ returned to the club where he’d graduated in the 1990s from Portsmouth and went on to score some of the most famous goals in the club’s recent history - the winner at City to take us into the Champions League play-offs, a hat-trick against Young Boys as we reached the group stages and then the winner against AC Milan at the San Siro.

At the same time, Harry signed Academy forms and was banging in the goals at youth level (18 in 22 games in 2009-10) before joining Leyton Orient on loan in the second half of the 2010-11 campaign.

He made his first team debut in the Europa League against Hearts in August, 2011 and Peter departed for Stoke at the end of that month.

“Crouchy was absolute top man and I got on well with him,” recalled Harry, who will now lead the line against Peter’s Stoke team at the Britannia on Saturday.

“He knew what it was like as a young player coming through the Academy, how much work it takes and that you have to be patient and take your chances.

“It was great to be able to speak to him and learn from his experiences.

“He has scored goals at all levels and he's still going strong at Stoke. He did it for England as well. It was fantastic to have a striker like him around when I was growing up in the Academy.”
