Harry Kane shortlisted for BBC SPOTY award

Harry Kane would love to follow in the footsteps of Spurs greats by being recognised at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards this evening.

The striker takes his place on the shortlist of 12 for the main award at the prestigious annual sporting event held this year at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Harry is bidding to become the fourth Spur to take home a SPOTY award.

The Club's first was the Team of the Year awarded to Bill Nicholson's double-winning team of 1960-61.

Paul Gascoigne's World Cup heroics were recognised as he won SPOTY in 1990 and Gary Lineker was third in 1991.

"It’s a huge honour to be nominated," said Harry. "This was always the awards show I remember watching when I was a kid, so to be nominated and be up there with the elite of British sport is fantastic.

"I wasn’t expecting it at the time when it was announced but it would be great to win it."

The shortlist

A 12-person panel of broadcasters, journalists and former sports stars put the shortlist together.

Joining Harry as nominees are Elise Christie (short track speed skating), Sir Mo Farah (athletics), Chris Froome (cycling), Lewis Hamilton (F1), Anthony Joshua (boxing), Johanna Konta (tennis), Jonnie Peacock (para-athletics), Adam Peaty (swimming), Jonathan Rea (motorcycling), Anya Shrubsole (cricket) and Bianca Walkden (taekwondo).

Harry's 2017

Harry was straight into goalscoring action on New Year's Day with a double at Watford - the first two of 50 goals to date for Club and country in 2017.

He enjoyed a phenomenal end to the season with eight goals in our final three matches - one in the Lane Finale against Manchester United, four at Leicester and a hat-trick at Hull - to win the Premier League's Golden Boot for the second-successive season, this time with 29 goals.

He captained England in the summer and scored a crucial late equaliser against the Auld Enemy Scotland in World Cup qualifying in June. He then scored the winner against Slovenia that officially secured England's place in next summer's finals in October.

SPOTY - don't forget to vote!

The public will decide this year’s winner by phone and online during a special live television show in front of an audience of nearly 11,000 people at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Sunday 17 December, the night after we take on Manchester City at the Etihad.
