Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards

Vedran Corluka was a special guest at this year's Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards at Alexandra Palace this week.

The Croatian handed out awards to the borough's top sportsmen and women alongside the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Alan Dobbie.

And it was a big night for Spurs overall as the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies took home two gongs for Club of the Year and Adult Team of the Year at the prestigious event (pictured below).

Also rewarded was Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coach Gareth Jones for Disabled Coach of the Year (pictured right).

Vedran said: "It was an honour for me to present these awards and meet people who have achieved great things in their sports.

"When I was growing up as a footballer, it was always nice to have my achievements recognised, so it is important that these events take place and even more important that a Club like Spurs supports them."

Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards

It was the second time Haringey had staged the awards, set up to promote sports activity and excellence in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

The awards were sponsored by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Haringey Sports Development Trust, Tottenham Grammar School Foundation, Pro-Active North London, Everyone's a Winner and Briggs Sports

Other winners included a young karate star, a badminton coach, a netball team and a football team for children with Aspergers Syndrome.

More than 100 people attended the evening, with entertainment provided by Haringey Young Musicians Steel Orchestra.

Haringey Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said: "This was a really successful event. It was a privilege to meet so many different people from different backgrounds who are all committed to making Haringey a borough of sporting excellence.

"I'd like to congratulate all of the winners and all those who were shortlisted for these awards. I hope other residents will be inspired by their dedication and success."
