Hans tribute to 'Walks'

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Hans Segers has paid a glowing tribute to Ian Walker, who returns to the Lane for the first time on Saturday after leaving for Leicester City last summer.

'Walks' made over 300 appearances in a 13-year association with us stretching all the way back to 1988 when he joined the club as a trainee.

But the England goalkeeper lost his first team spot to the outstanding Neil Sullivan last season and felt the time was right for him to move on when the Foxes came calling in July last year.

He's performed well despite City's slump to the bottom of the Premiership and his form has been recognised by Sven Goran Eriksson, who has recalled him to the England squad this season.

Hans was Ian's coach for three seasons before he left for Filbert Street and our goalkeeping guru has nothing put praise and admiration for him.

"I'm sure Ian's just glad to be back playing again," said Hans. "I've seen a couple of matches and he's playing well. That's what he wanted so I just hope for him and the club they stay up. It doesn't look good though, I'm afraid.

"He's playing well and he's got competition over there as well and that's good for him. Someone like Ian needs competition to keep him on this toes."

Hans was particularly impressed with the way Ian conducted himself last season.

“Ian did very well and I think that’s the reward he has now,” he insisted. “He grinded it out and it was tough for the boy because he was number one for so many years.

“But he was professional, kept his focus, got on with the job and the reward was there for him.

“I always reminded him ‘you never know what is around the corner, be focused, do your job’ and Leicester came in and now he's playing again.

"Personally I rate him very highly. He has superb technique. He has been picked for England before and the way he's playing he might get back in."
