Gylfi's game plan

28 January 2014|Tottenham Hotspur

Gylfi Sigurdsson has emphasised the importance of resolute defending and opening Manchester City up when we get the chance on Wednesday night.

Our Icelandic midfielder, who returned to action last time out against Swansea City after a spell on the sidelines with a calf problem, insists we’re positive in our approach to the game – and he says we can draw inspiration from the fine victory we enjoyed against City on their visit to White Hart Lane last term.

“We showed last year when we played at home when we beat them 3-1 that we’re more than capable of getting three points,” said the 24-year-old.

“We’ve got to defend well because they’ve got some very good players attacking-wise, but we’ve also got to try to expose them when we attack, play some good football going forward and score a few goals.

“I think they’re probably averaging about four goals per game at the moment so we know it’s going to be a really tough match and they’ve got some outstanding players.

“But we’ve been on a good run and we want to continue that form. We’re playing at home so we’re looking forward to trying to get the three points.”

It’s been 10 days since our last top flight outing – a 3-1 win at Swansea – while City have had their hands full on Capital One Cup and FA Cup duty in the intervening time.

But Gylfi believes our break in play won’t be an issue come Wednesday night – and he said that avenging our heavy defeat at the Etihad in November is also a consideration for the lads.

“We’ve played so many games already. It’s been 10 days (since our last game) so it’s not too bad, we’ve been training all week and we’re ready to go,” Gylfi added.

“The trip up to City was, for me, the hardest game to watch from the bench and then obviously to come on in. It was not a nice feeling in the dressing room afterwards so I’m sure the boys will be ready to go on Wednesday night and get some revenge.”
