Gylfi upbeat ahead of new season

Gylfi Sigurdsson feels we can be positive going into next season.

The Iceland midfielder highlighted our disappointed record against the eventual top four teams in the Premier League as a key area to improve.

Gylfi, whose fantastic strike against Hull was named Goal of the Season by fans recently, spoke to us after his final appearance of the campaign, playing his part in Iceland’s 1-0 win against Armenia.

“If you look at the final points total, we’re only three off our record haul and yet we only got one point against the top four teams, so if we can change that, we can push on again next season,” he said.

“The results against Liverpool, City and Chelsea away make it look a lot worse, even though we admit it wasn’t the best of seasons.

“The new lads have all had a full season, they are settled in now and that’s good for the club. Let’s hope we can kick-on.”

That’s exactly what Gylfi intends to do on a personal level after finishing the campaign with six goals in 35 appearances in all competitions.

“I was happy with parts of the season, probably until around November time. I’d scored four or five goals by then,” he reflected.

“It would have been nice to have scored 10 goals, that’s what I look for every season. Next season, I’d like to play more regularly and help the team with a few more goals and assists.”
