Gwen’s special day
31 January 2017|Tottenham Hotspur
Gary Mabbutt paid a surprise visit to Gwen Bates, lifelong Spurs fan and former employee of the Club, to wish her a happy 87th birthday and present her with a bouquet of flowers.
Gwen, who worked in our laundry department during the 1990s, often used to invite the players, including Gary, to join her for a cup of tea. Along with her close friend Sylvie, who spent 28 years at the Club, they ran a tight ship in the laundry room and were affectionately known by the players as the ‘Golden Girls’.
Unfortunately, Gwen’s health deteriorated when she suffered a heart attack in March last year and a difficult 2016 was compounded by the loss of her husband in August.
However, Gwen has bravely batted on and is now back at her home of the past 40 years in Middleham Road – just a stone’s throw from the Lane.
She was over the moon to see Gary, share a cup of tea and reminisce on the good old days. One of her favorite memories of Gary was when his shirt was pulled during a game, the collar came away and he had to quickly ask Gwen to sew it back on for him.
Gary went on to recall Gwen having a twinkle in her eye for Paul Stewart, which he had mentioned to Paul during a phone conversation last week – Paul had asked Gary to pass on his love (although Gwen later went on to admit that her real favourite was Darren Anderton!)
Gwen took great pleasure in telling Gary that she could see the cranes on the new stadium construction site from her back garden and, depending on which way the wind is blowing, she can hear the cheers from the crowd on a match day.
Gary said: “It was great to see Gwen again and give her a deserved birthday treat after what has been an extremely difficult year for her and her family.
“To be able to reminisce on old times clearly meant a lot to her and despite all that she has been through, her support for the Club is as strong as ever.”
