Gus saves the day

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gus Poyet did suggest that, had the game against Birmingham resulted in a draw, the main talking point would have been his conceding of a penalty rather than his spectacular winner.

Gus struck a delightful winner with three minutes left on the clock, having 12 minutes earlier felled the impressive Christophe Dugarry in the area to give away a spot-kick that was converted by Paul Devlin.

Footballing fate had it, however, that the midfielder was, in the end, cast in the role of hero when his left foot connected with a long clearance by Kasey Keller the secure the full quota of points from the encounter.

"It is funny because, if it was a draw, you would have said to me 'you gave the penalty away'," laughed Gus.

"That's football, I'm not saying I felt responsible because I tried to play the ball maybe in the wrong way - sometimes you make decisions and they are the wrong ones.

"After my decision was to hit the ball first time with my left foot and it was the right one. It is football and that is why I am really pleased to be involved in a team like Tottenham, playing in front of 36,000 at White Hart Lane. What can be better than that?

"I was lucky because Teddy just let it go. When the ball bounced and it went just past me I thought 'this is the one'," he added, before attempting to explain the mechanics of goalscoring.

"There are many things involved in a goal. Timing, luck - I don't know, you just have to be there. Don't be afraid, that's the point, don't be afraid to hit it.

"It makes it nice now. It was a key game and we knew it - it is up to us to keep going now. Let's see now if we can get on a good run."
