Gus makes his point

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gus Poyet says there was a desire among the players to prove a point against Coventry City in the Carling Cup - adding that we now need to maintain, if not improve, that form against Manchester City.

The Uruguayan livewire, who made his first appearance of the season following a wrist injury, was his usual energetic self against the Division One outfit and explained later that external criticism of the team provided an added motivation to get the season back on course after recent disappointments.

"It was much better," he said. "We liked it because everybody was talking too much about us during the week and sometimes saying incorrect things about events at the club.

"It was up to us to go out there and prove to people that they were wrong. We can play better, we can be solid and we didn't concede a goal playing away from home. I think the television was expecting an upset, but we came here and worked really hard for each other."

Despite Gus expressing all the positive factors from the evening's work, it just had to be mentioned! Two goals to the good just before the break and an inviting heading opportunity right in front of goal - swiftly followed by another. Both spurned by, of all people, renowned headed goal expert, one G Poyet.

"Hah, hah," he responded. "It was one of the things I was saying to the guys when they were laughing about it - I don't have any excuses. I missed them.

"The first one I didn't want to miss the target because it was quite close - I thought it was a good save! The second one I don't know why I didn't volley it. It is a decision that you make though.

"Maybe it is alright, we won 3-0 and perhaps I am saving it for a more difficult game."

Of course, this week is a tale of two City's and next up is the Manchester version at the superb new City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday. Gus says the cup win should put the team in the right frame of mind for the challenge of taking on Kevin Keegan's side.

"That is the point and we mustn't relax at all. Let's see if we can keep this good work up as confidence is always good for the team, for the strikers to score and the defenders to keep a clean sheet.

"Everything was alright against Coventry, nothing special, but it was better - and a relief."
