Gus and Mauricio
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Standing on the pitch in an empty White Hart Lane, you could sense the excitement as Gustavo Poyet and Mauricio Taricco pictured the scene — a packed house and Aston Villa the opponents on day one of the new season.
The pair were at the ground with Les Ferdinand and Alton Thelwell for a photo shoot earlier this week.
The Official Spurs Website was there as well and we spoke to Gus and Mauricio together.
Starting with you Gus, you’ve been looking forward to the first day since you joined the club.
Gus: “I’ve been looking forward to it since the first day of training at Tottenham. I’m excited. I think everything is all right and we are ready for it.”
It must have been nice to make a good impression against Fiorentina.
Gus: “It was perfect. We had a good game, I didn’t expect to see a full stadium, that was nice and it was nice for them to see us playing good football, scoring goals and winning. Perfect.”
How have you settled in?
Gus: “Things have been perfect, magnificent. At the moment everything is right. But now it is important.”
And what do you think about Villa?
Gus: “The first game is always difficult. They have already played in the Inter Toto Cup, playing really tough games and they will probably be a little more fit than us. Apart from that we play at home and we hope to play well and enjoy it with the supporters.”
Turning to you Mauricio, you have slotted in on the right in Stephen Carr’s absense. This is a chance for you.
Mauricio: “Unfortunately Carry is not fit and that is a shame but I have said many times, in the Premiership you have to have a big squad. Every individual in the squad has to be ready for their chance. It is a shame Carry is injured because he is a great player, very important for our team and I hope I can do a job there.”
If everything went to plan (although it looks unlikely) you could find yourself up against David Ginola. You were close friends with him at Spurs. What would it be like to play him?
Mauricio: “I have to do my job and hopefully he will understand that. I have to do what I need to do to do my job and get a good result for my team. It will be strange to play against him but we are both professionals and when the whistle goes, friendship is outside for 90 minutes. When it is finished, friendship comes back in. But during those 90 minutes I’m playing to get three points, to win and to hopefully give happiness to the whole ground.”
It must seem like a new start for you after last season’s injury worries.
Mauricio: “I feel good, I feel pain free, which I haven’t felt for a long time. I’m just looking forward to a new season. It’s nice to be involved again. We’ve signed a few new players, I was playing on the left, then Christian Ziege comes and now I’m over on the right — proof of how football is. I feel ready.”
And what about Gus? How has he settled in?
Mauricio: “He is very experienced, played in different leagues and the record shows how good he is — 50 goals in 150 games from midfield, one in three.”
Gus: ‘He knows it!”
Mauricio: “The only bad thing is that a few were against us. Now we have him he won’t score against us!”
Perhaps you could score against Chelsea this time.
Gus: “It would be nice, but that is a long way away.”
By Paul Miles <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
