Great goalkeeper,<br> great man
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Paul Robinson has paid tribute to Nigel Martyn and described his former team-mate as a 'great goalkeeper and great man'.
The pair will be at opposite ends of the pitch at Goodison Park as we travel to Everton in the Premiership on Saturday.
They were together at Leeds United for six years as Robbo progressed from Academy trainee to eventually take Martyn's place at the start of the 2002-03 season.
Martyn made over 250 appearances for Leeds and was in goal when they finished third in the Premiership and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1999-2000.
Capped 23 times by England, Martyn moved to Everton last season and won the club's Player of the Year Award for 2003-04. He shows no signs of letting up at the age of 38.
Meanwhile, Robbo went on to make over 100 appearances for Leeds before joining us in the summer.
He's made a fantastic start to his career at the Lane and took the England number one shirt off David James for the last international in Poland.
But he hasn't forgotten what he learned from Martyn. "He's a great goalkeeper and a great man," stated the 24-year-old.
"I ended up taking his place at Leeds but we stayed the best of friends. I can't fault him and he's one of the nicest men you could ever meet.
"He helped me a lot. We had a goalkeeping coach at Leeds but being with someone like Nigel every day you can't help but learn from him. He's such a quality professional."
Robbo's international career has followed a similar path to Martyn's with the need to wait patiently for his England chance.
Martyn had David Seaman to overcome but still managed to win 23 caps.
"You have to be patient," added Robbo. "I was patient a long time waiting behind Nigel at Leeds. You then have to take your chance when it comes.
"There is a lot of pressure and in our position mistakes are highlighted, everyone knows that. Everyone is bound to make mistakes, we're all human, but the better goalkeepers make less mistakes."
