'Great for me and my family' - Sonny on award
02 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Heung-Min Son has vowed not to rest on his laurels after scooping a top award from the Asian Football Confederation.
The organisation named our South Korean star the Asian International Player of the Year at their Annual Awards in New Delhi on Sunday (November 29).
It comes after an impressive spell for the 23-year-old, who scored 17 goals for German side Bayer Leverkusen in 2014-15 prior to joining us in August.
Having made 10 appearances in our colours to date, scoring three goals, Sonny was thrilled to receive the award – but said the hard work for him is only just beginning.
“It’s very good news for me and for my family – they are very happy,” he said.
“It’s been an amazing year for me. I scored my first Champions League goal for Bayer Leverkusen against Benfica – I was very happy to score in the Champions League and it was a dream for me to play there.
“The 2014-15 season was very good for me, a good time. I made progress and I’m very thankful to Leverkusen and Tottenham. I had a good time at Leverkusen and without my time there I would not be here.
“I am very happy now to play in the Premier League and at Tottenham Hotspur – the best team!
“It’s great to get this award but I must keep going to get much better.”
Sonny has also enjoyed success on the international scene. He’s netted nine goals for South Korea during the 2015 calendar year, including three at the AFC Asian Cup in January, and he’s targeting more of the same for both club and country heading into 2016.
“It’s amazing to score for South Korea,” he said. “It’s very important for me and I want to score more next year!
“I know I can score more for South Korea and for Spurs. Scoring isn’t everything but I want to play well for the team, the staff and the fans.
“It’s not easy to score goals but I’ll try everything to do it for Spurs and at international level. I’ll try 100 per cent or even more – 120 per cent!”
