Goran's dream still alive

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Goran Bunjevcevic’s World Cup dream is still alive — and as our summer recruit from Red Star Belgrade recovers from injury at Spurs Lodge, his heart will certainly be back in Yugoslavia on Wednesday night.

Defender Goran missed out on Yugoslavia’s win in Switzerland on Saturday and will again be miles away from home when his country tackle Slovenia in a vital clash tonight.

He has instead been concentrating on getting fit for Sunday’s Premiership clash against Southampton after picking up an ankle injury at Everton on August 20.

Goran’s joy at Yugoslavia’s triumph in Switzerland was tempered slightly by Slovenia’s 2-1 win in Russia.

That left Yugoslavia in third behind leaders Russia and Slovenia with all three still vying for the top two places.

Goran said: “The only disappointing thing for Yugoslavia was that Slovenia beat Russia in Russia so now we have to beat Slovenia at home.

“It is a very difficult game. We are big rivals from the same country. If we want to be second in the group and go to the World Cup we have to beat Slovenia. It will be very, very difficult.”

Goran would love to be involved in next year’s World Cup Finals.

“Of course I dream of playing in the World Cup,” he said. “I played in the European Championships and it has to be a dream of every player.

“Look at the Dutch team now, look at the quality they have, that generation can be ruined because four years from now that squad may not be together. It is very disappointing for them.

“Perhaps you don’t realise until it is taken away from you. We have to work hard because every team is very hard.”

Yugoslavia have been in regular contact with Goran and even suggested he joined up with the squad but it was deemed better that he stayed at Spurs Lodge to overcome his injury.

He revealed: “I spoke to the gaffer and I think now Tottenham is very important for me and we decided it would be better to stay here for treatment and prepare for the Premiership.”
