Gomes saves best for SW6

Heurelho Gomes has turned his Cottage sigh into a Cottage high over the last two years.

Heurelho Gomes has turned his Cottage sigh into a Cottage high over the last two years.

The goalkeeper was vilified after making a mistake in a defeat at Fulham back in November, 2008, but has now performed admirably in three visits to Craven Cottage.

He made a string of fine saves as both our Premier League and FA Cup matches ended in goalless draws last season and produced the goods again in Saturday's 2-1 victory.

Gomes had to be at his best to turn away Diomansy Kamara's piledriver at the end of the first half and then showed typical reactions to tip over Chris Baird's bullet header in the second half.

He could do little about Kamara's opener but Roman Pavlyuchenko's swift response and Tom Huddlestone's much-debated winner saw us home.

As always, Gomes was more concerned about winning the match than being applauded for his own efforts.

"I just want to be ready to help my team," said Gomes. "I need to concentrate and that was the situation again. And that's the case all the time. All that matters is the team.

"It's not easy to beat Fulham at Craven Cottage. It's the first time I've won here and I thought we deserved to win.

"They created some chances as well but we defended well and it was a massive win for us."

Gomes was particularly impressed with Sebastien Bassong's display alongside William Gallas after the defender replaced injured Ledley King just before half-time.

"Seb did a great job," he said. "It's never easy to replace a defender like that during a game but he was strong, just like he always is.

"I thought we defended particularly well at the end of the game.

"It's a great win. We're up there, we're fighting for the top four and it's a massive result for us."
