Gomes on top of the world

Heurelho Gomes says he's living the dream as the World Cup rapidly approaches.

Heurelho Gomes says he's living the dream as the World Cup rapidly approaches.

Our popular goalkeeper - outstanding as we finished fourth in the Premier League last season - is in the Brazilian squad with Inter's Julio Cesar and Doni of AS Roma.

Cesar, a key figure in Inter's treble of Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League last term, is seen as Brazil's number one but suffered an injury in last week's friendly win against Zimbabwe and coach Dunga turned to Gomes to take over in goal.

Gomes responded with a fine display and a clean sheet in a 3-0 win and kept hold of the shirt in Brazil's final warm-up friendly against Tanzania on Monday.

As expected, Brazil won comfortably 5-1, but Gomes made a couple of fine saves in the second half as he completed the full 90-minute stint.

Whether or not he lines-up in Brazil's opener against North Korea in South Africa on June 15, Gomes is relishing every moment in the sport's showpiece event.

"It's great for every player," Gomes told us exclusively on Monday. "It's the highest level in football and for me, it's a like a dream to be involved.

"Every day I wake up and think about this moment. It's lovely for me and for my family.

"It's great for Tottenham as well. The club has helped me so much.

"I'm very happy and I just hope Brazil can win the competition. We have so many great players in the squad. It's great to be here."

Look out for more from Gomes here on in the build-up to Brazil's opener...
