Goalscorers react to Hull win: 'We did it for the pride of our club and fans'
22 May 2017|Tottenham Hotspur
Our goalscorers spoke about playing for pride and for the fans when we caught up with them after Sunday’s 7-1 victory at Hull City.
Harry Kane took the headlines with his fifth hat-trick of the season to make absolutely sure of a second consecutive Premier League Golden Boot, but Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama, Ben Davies and Toby Alderweireld were equally thrilled to have joined him on the scoresheet at the KCOM Stadium.
It was left-back Ben’s first league goal in our colours, his only previous strike coming against Aston Villa in the FA Cup back in January, while it was centre-back Toby’s first Premier League goal of the season.
Here’s what the lads had to say afterwards…
On the outcome
“It was a great performance again. We started very well and we wanted to end the season strongly and with 6-1 and 7-1 wins, I think we did. It’s very nice to give the fans something to enjoy. This season overall they’ve watched a terrific Tottenham and it’s nice to end like this. They can be proud and happy with the team.”
On his goal
“I was desperate! I was waiting, I really wanted to score, I had a little bit of luck but I’m happy to score a little goal at the end of the season.”
On Harry Kane’s goalscoring feats
“He’s unbelievable. In the last two games the team has helped him, to try to give him the ball but at the end of it he has to score. He works so hard for the team so we are very happy that we can help him and he did it of course by himself to be the top scorer of the Premier League.”
Is this a statement win going into next season?
“That’s something we talked about. Of course we had last season in mind, we didn’t perform that well at the end of the season so it was like a message and the mentality we always want to have – even if we don’t play for anything except for pride – is that we still keep on going and keep playing fantastic football.”
Thoughts on the game
“I thought we did well, it was a good team performance all round so we are really happy to end the season this way. Today we played for the fans, for the pride of the club. We wanted to thank the fans for this amazing season where they have shown good support to us, so we needed to raise our game today and perform well.”
On scoring a header for the second consecutive weekend
“I’ve missed some sitters with my head but now I think I’m improving so hopefully I can get more!”
On Harry Kane
“I think it’s brilliant, missing 11 weeks and coming back and scoring all those goals – it’s unbelievable and I think he’s one of the best in the world.”
Outlook going into next term
“There is nothing to worry about, we are building a special thing. Hopefully come next season we will improve and be better.”
On his goal
“I’ve felt like I’ve come close a couple of times recently so to score today was great. It was a good tackle! No, seriously, it was a nice lay-off by Victor, I thought just to try to hit the target and it was a good strike. It’s a nice little reward for all the work.”
On the overall result
“It was a lovely way to finish off the season. We’ve worked hard this year and to finish it off that way was great. It was a great performance and when you’re winning games you can enjoy them and that’s exactly what it felt like for us today. We wanted to enjoy it, to go out on a high and by scoring goals and winning the game we were able to do that.”
On his goals
“It's been incredible. To score eight goals in the final week of a Premier League season is a special feeling and to win this (Golden Boot) and finish on 29 goals in 30 games is something I'm very proud of. I've had a couple of setbacks this season with injuries but they've only made me stronger.”
On the key to his success
“I've got to give big thanks to the team. They create so many chances and I've just got to make sure I'm in the positions to put them away. Sonny, Dele, Christian, the boys at the back and Hugo, the midfield securing everything up and Trips and Ben putting in the deliveries, it's a dream to play for this team.”
On Kieran Trippier’s assists
“His delivery is unbelievable, he gets into great positions and as a striker, that's perfect. I just have to get myself into the box, make the runs and he'll put the ball where I want it.”
On securing the Golden Boot in last two games
“We've been speaking about it and I knew going into the Leicester game that I needed another couple of goals, but to score four then and then another three today, the lads did me a favour. They were trying to set me up the whole game and I'll have to tell them to do that again from the start of next season! To finish by winning 6-1 and 7-1 is a good feeling.”
Dele simply summed up his post-match emotions in one tweet…
