Glenn's tribute

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn paid tribute to the great Bill Nicholson after the victory over Fiorentina and was delighted with the fans for making it such a memorable occasion.

It was a special night all round at a buzzing White Hart Lane — a packed house to honour Bill, excellent preparation for Glenn and the management team and a top performance to keep the fans enthralled.

Glenn’s first half seating companion was the man himself, and they were both no doubt purring over the team’s fluent display.

"It was lovely that he was sitting next to me in the directors’ box during the first half," reflected Glenn.

"I was 15 when I first met Bill — and I was still trembling now when I met him. That is the stature and respect he has got at this club.

"I am delighted for him and his family that the club have given him this tribute and that so many people have come out and shown their appreciation of what he has done for the club.

"And all for the love of him, because he certainly loves this club. I think it’s two-fold — credit to all the fans for turning out tonight and making a good occasion of it.

Meanwhile, Glenn insists that his preparations do not include forming a best X1 in his mind ahead of the big kick-off.

"I’ve been asked that after every pre-season game and my answer is the same. I think most managers would tell you, in this modern day game, that there is not any such thing as a best X1, there really isn’t.

"It is a squad situation. I don’t like the word rotation, because that seems as if you’re just keeping people happy. It’s about whatever opposition you are playing against sometimes and what shape and personnel are going to suit.

"That’s what we’ve got to build here and it is what United have got for sure, Leeds are building it, Chelsea, Liverpool. That’s going to take time, but we’ve got to have a squad where if one player is on, he’ll give you a bonus in one way and if someone else comes on it’s just the same strength and depth, but in a different way.

"That isn’t going to happen overnight."

Asked if he currently had horses for every course, Glenn added: "No. Not at all. I’m being honest and saying we haven’t got that depth yet. The bottom line is how long did it take United to get that squad together?

"We’ve got to bring on the youngsters and there is no better way of doing that than bringing in the experienced players we have done for the first couple of years.

"That’s the first plan, the second, in the longer term, is to get that squad that we were talking about.

On the injury front, Glenn says that the absence of Darren Anderton from the Fiorentina game was just a precaution and he should be ready for the new campaign.

"I would think Darren is not a problem. It was more of a precautionary thing, I don’t want to set that back, he had an operation on his Achilles and there was a slight stiffness and tenderness there and we didn’t want to take the risk.

"Teddy and Stephen Carr is a different story. Both are probably going to take a little longer. That is a concern and one we’ve really got to get right for the long term.

"Darren, Tim Sherwood and Oyvind Leonhardsen are probably going to be back within six to seven days. That’s refreshing, but we’d like everyone fit."
