Glenn Hoddle has sounded a rallying call to fans to get behind the team as he aims for a two-pronged target against Cardiff City tonight - to put Saturday's defeat behind us and to go one step further in the Worthington Cup.
The team was devastated after what the boss described as 'the worst performance in my time here' against Middlesbrough but he insists the lads are determined to put it right against the Welsh high-fliers in this second round tie.
And he has asked the fans to play their part. "We need the supporters to be behind us, right behind us from the first minute," said Glenn.
"We know we let ourselves down and let them down and we're hoping to bounce back.
"We went all the way to the final last season and we want to go one step further this time and it starts now, in this game and if we have a good cup run, no-one will remember Middlesbrough if we get to the final.
"That's what our aims are, to go one step further. That starts at home to Cardiff and I'm sure the supporters will help us get through this sticky wicket. We've all got to pull together."
Asked how the mood in the camp was, Glenn replied. "Fine. You have to move on quickly and respond. When you've lost you want to get a win under your belt.
"We were very poor and we're aware of that. The supporters have been fantastic since I've been at the club but if we perform like that, they've every right to feel disgruntled.
"We've got to hold our hands up, staff, players, everyone involved on the football side and say 'that wasn't good enough'.
"It was unacceptable but it's only unacceptable in the sense that we have to make sure it's a one-off.
"The boys, when we have lost this season, we haven't performed like that. We've put in a good stint, worked hard, put all our energy into it and there were reasons why we might have lost. Saturday was a one-off.
"It was the worst we've played and I think it will be the worst we'll play. Maybe by hitting the bottom we can rise up again."
