Glenn's Monaco memories

10 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

The fact that Glenn Hoddle is still so revered by supporters of both Spurs and Monaco just shows what an impact he had at both clubs.

The gifted midfielder is regarded as a true legend here at the Lane, not just by the generation of fans who were fortunate enough to watch him display his magical qualities during 12 years with us. But Glenn is also held in such high esteem by the next wave of Spurs supporters, who will have been told by their elders about his skill and mastery and will have watched for themselves on websites and DVDs.

And it’s a similar story among those over in the South Stand this evening cheering on our French opponents in our Europa League Group J clash, the Monaco fans who welcomed Glenn with open arms when he decided to ply his trade on the continent as a player and helped them to win silverware during his few years in France.

Glenn helped us win promotion, back-to-back FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in 490 appearances but aged 29, he felt it was time to experience something different in his career and, as he explains, Monaco were a good fit for him at the time.

“I wanted to test myself as a player and playing abroad was always something I wanted to do,” he said. “I had a couple of opportunities earlier in my career, I nearly went to Cologne, a big club at the time, and also Napoli.

“I felt 13 years was good service to Spurs and this time I wanted to go. I really enjoyed it, a technical club as well, similar to Tottenham, so that was great for me and we were successful as well.”
