Glenn's domestic bliss
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Glenn Hoddle has explained the thinking behind a largely domestic diet of pre-season friendlies, which continues with a trip to Portsmouth on Wednesday evening.
The preparation programme so far has consisted of short trips to Stevenage Borough, Swindon Town, Leyton Orient and Wycombe Wanderers - opposition we would expect to beat, but have a real competitive edge to the games.
While many teams are currently touring Europe and the far east to prepare for the new season, Glenn feels that staying local is of more benefit to the team at this stage.
"This is absolutely spot on for what we need at his moment in time," said Glenn. "The lads are still coming back, trying to get their fitness levels up and these games provide stiff opposition.
"For different reasons, we're tough for the opposition because of the class and difference, but these are just right for us at the moment and if you look at the pre-season we are building it up as we go along, the games now start to become tougher, what we've identified as tougher games and as we get fitter we should be able to deal with that, finishing off against Fiorentina and an overseas fixture, which should be a hard game.
"You've got to be ready by the time the season starts, but it's a build up."
Glenn does admit, however, that had we been due to compete in European competition this campaign, the pre-season cocktail might have had a slightly different flavour.
"A bit of a mixture, a bit of both sometimes is good. We're not in Europe this year, if we were I think we would have gone for a more continental feel, but no, I think what we're doing is important."
