Glenn: We deserved something

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn Hoddle was proud of his injury-hit team and insisted they deserved some reward for their efforts at Old Trafford.

With Christian Ziege ruled out late in the week, the boss had 13 players missing at United, including the complete back four that started against West Ham just six days earlier.

But with Kasey Keller inspirational in goal, we weathered United's attacking storm until just after the hour, when Ruud Van Nistelrooy dispatched what turned out to be the winner from the spot after Gary Doherty upended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Glenn said: "I thought we put in a good performance. We're disappointed we lost, obviously, but I felt we deserved something from the game.

"The complete back four from Sunday disappeared and we had to re-adjust.

"Simon Davies has had to play right-back and I thought he was excellent. He had an outstanding game both defensively and going forward.

"Under the circumstances, we gave a good account of ourselves.

"You come here and whatever form they are in, they throw questions at you and I felt we answered most of them. In the end it took a penalty to make the difference."

Ironically, despite United's chances, we had the best chance of the game when Fabien Barthez denied Dean Richards from five yards. We also had calls for a penalty when Rio Ferdinand appeared to handle.

"There was a handball there, definitely," Glenn pointed out. "Ted's got a flick and it's stopped the ball going to one of our players.

"We had no complaints about their penalty. I didn't think the first one was and Doc insists he got something on the ball but the second was a definite penalty and we had no complaints.

"The key for us was that we worked hard, battled hard and if Deano had scored with a great opportunity it would have been an interesting end to the game.

"Deano's a danger in there. It was one of them when he probably got too good a contact on the ball. If you mishit them, they tend to go into the corner. That's the difference.

"Having said that, Kasey's has a good game as well.

"We can take a lot of heart from that performance having 13 players in the treatment room.

"I can't complain with how we played. It was a very decent performance from us, very assured defensively after so many changes. We now have to make sure we bounce back next week."
